Having a dilema .... planning a 2019 wyoming antelope hunt , and wanting to build a new CF rifle for the hunt ....this is hopefully going to be a long range hunt ( 400 \ 600 yrd) long to me .I already kno it will be a 700 action with a brux light \ heavy varmint barrel . GRS stock the thing i cant figure out is which caliber ..... already in the rack is a 308,2 - 243 s, 7mm mag , 300 sav, 30\30 ,35 whelan, 3 -45 sml was thinking 7mm\08 , 6.5 creed more, 25\ 06 just looking for a different caliber from whats already there any suggestions are appreciated .

The 6.5 creedmoor is very interesting to me as well. Looking at a AR in it now. My buddy loves the Hornady eld x in his 6.5

At the distances you list I would just go with the 7mm mag you already have but that said if you want a different one and reload I like the 25-06 (have one for over 55 years) or Roy Weatherby's favorite, the .257 Weatherby.

the creed will do fine, myself? I'm thinking 7 SAUM on my next build in a short action with a 26" Proof barrel. I built a creed last year and it would do great as a speed goat gun.

The 6.5 has quite a few bullets available. I have thought of a 6.5x284 or a 6.5 WSM of some sort. Just my idea of a long range hunting gun.

The 7mm mag has always been my favorite caliber as it's good for about everything. My next rifle will, probably, be a 6mm Creedmoor, just because it appeals to me the most.

Any of the 6.5's will do 600yds easy. The Creedmoor or 260 are the two I would choose from. Both will shoot accurate and kill easily at 600 yds.

Im leaning on the 6.5 ..... Excellent bullet selection in 6.5mm. And there is no denying the ballistic capabilities of those bullets as well. Are you handloading for the rifle?

Hard to beat a 7mm Mag for what you want to do but I have several 260's and 6.5/284 Norma's The 6.5/284 is my go to gun for varmints and light weight animals like der and antelope. The 140 Berger VLD is a good killer you can buy loaded ammo for it. The 6.5 Creed is nothing more than a 260 Rem I have used them for 15 years in Silhouette its a good cartridge but when you want to kill animals at 600 yards it certainly is not at the top of my list. Since you reload take a look at the 6.5/284 you can easily drive a 140gr VLD at 3000 fps with RL 16 powder recoil is still mild. Or you could go to a .264 Mag or even a custom 6.5/300 whby I had two of those over the years you can buy the brass already formed which is a real plus at 6.5/300 Whby with a 26" barrel will get you near 3400 fps with a 140gr bullet that is smoking.

I picked up a 25-06 about 2 years ago. LOVE it. First deer with that one was 400 yards. It has plenty of reach for antelope. You can get bullets with a better B.C. in .264, but the antelope will never know the difference.
My brother just got a 6.5 Creedmor, and he likes it. Since it seems to be the hot new thing, it should be here to stay.
As a reloader, it won't make a difference. Being nostalgic, I'd say get the 25-06. (between the 2 of them)

Since you handload and seem to have the standard stuff, look at the .257stw. .257 Roy and Weatherby can not keep up with it.

I have a 260 Ackley improved, it is a tack driver. I shoot in a long range match 2 months ago in WV, most shooters were shooting 6.5 CM. 2 out of 54 were 260.
My next rifle will be a 6.5 saum or 7 saum.
Last year when I went to Colorado for a combo elk/mule deer hunt I took my 300 wsm. The guides out there laughed at me and said I brought a cannon with me. They mostly use 7-08 or 308 for elk and mule deer. They said everyone from back east always bring cannons when elk hunting.
My understanding about antelope is a .243 is plenty for them

Way back when I was young it seems we had the 30-30, .270 and .30-06 for the most part. Most did well enough with those. I cannot believe the variety and new cartridges that seem to come out. Many not too far off the older varieties but certainly gives many choices, maybe too many choices. Makes it hard to decide sometimes.

Into the same plan. October 2019 coming on fast. Looks like area 26 is 1st choice. Be 7 in the group. Hunting out of Casper. My brother and 2 nephews live close, 1 in Casper, 1 works out of Casper for DOI on fire fighting crew and bro is in Evergreen CO. 4 of us from VA making the trek. For guns there will be 3 - 6.5 Creedmore, 1 - 6.5 PRC, 1 - 308win, 1 - 270, 1 - 30-06. For make there will be 2 Savage/6.5Creed and 1/PRC & 1/Savage/270, 1 Mauser/30-06, 1 Tikka/6.5Creed, 1 Rem 700/308. Personally I getting rid of my 308 and have the Savage 6.5 Creed tuned up. In 6.5 I'm shooting 129 grain SST. Most others shooting 140 SST or ELD-X in the 6.5s. At age 69 I just can't enjoy shooting the 308 any more and that 6.5 is really nice on performance and nice on recoil too. So far everyone is tuned up for shooting out to 400-600. Having a really good range finder is essential.
What area you put in for?
Hunt safe. 10
