While they did not walk across the range in front of us today, we had 20, as best we could count, pecking thru the grass 75 yards behind our range house much of the morning.
Weather today was 70* with rain, fog and drizzle all morning. NO wind!
For a change from the H-4198 duplex’s I have been shooting, I thought I would try some H-322 which I know is somewhat slower. On a clean barrel I loaded 10/65 of Clays/H-322 under a 290 TEZ smooth sized (one hand seating). After the first fouling shot, it printed three in .894” at 2641 fps at 100 yards.
For group #2 I switched to the 300 gr. SST with the same duplex. It averaged 2624 fps with a 14 fps ES and put three in .980” with all five going 1.6”. Great ES but poor five shot group.
For #3 I went back to my tried and true 10/60 Clays/H-4198 duplex and the 290 TEZ which gave an average velocity of 2721 with a 15 fps ES. All in all, it grouped tighter.
So 5 gr. less powder (H-322 vs. H-4198) and roughly 100 fps increase in velocity with better grouping and similar ES.
Moving out to 300 yards I went with the 250 TEZ and the above 10/60 duplex. The first shot blew out part of the top of my frame as my elevation adjustments were off. Dialing my scope up and over to POI I fired a six shot group. With the exception of shot #3, the five shot group went 1.7” and the best 3 went .637” Other dimensions listed in photos.
For the last group I went with the same combination only made an adjustment up and over………although the first two shots did not seem to reflect that?.....they wanted to go the opposite way. I was pretty sure I dialed the cross hairs left to the group which should have moved it right……….?? Or did I? So after putting two in the same hole, the third went way over to the right? Good hold, 32X NF scope, 2 oz. trigger, no wind (did not pull it)…….Hmmmm? Shot #4……..right where the first two SHOULD have went. #5 close by and #6 not too far away? Kind of a head scratcher but still managed four in a row under MOA
Something else tried today which I use on my CF 600 yard BR rifle………hanging a leather shot bag on the receiver/barrel. This is kind of like a saddle bag. Leather and filled with 6 lbs. of shot. Keeps the rifle from jumping………Obviously not for hunting!............Though, with these fancy tree/stand/houses and a four wheeler?
