I also got an idea to build a new, well rebuild, dedicated BR muzzle loader also. Unlike Bill, I am sticking with the .45 but who knows, down the road a switch is as simple as another barrel I have my "old" 1,000 yard Light gun, actually the one I got lucky with and set the 1K record, sitting in the safe and not being used. It is an older custom action, the company of which is no longer in business although it was sold to Time Precision in Ct. Anyway, it was originally designed for the PPC. I knew the owner of the company who lived in my town and he gave me two actions he still had that needed minor machine work to complete. These are short actions.......as in the XP-110 and Mohawk size........solid bottoms ........a beefier clone. The extractor had been giving me trouble and I only now u se my Stiller Viper for competition, so I thought I might make a ML'er out of it. The stock is a Shehane Tracker and it is set up to take a 1.250 barrel shank. I am going to have Airborneike convert the bolt to 209 and use Luke's plug. Elkman has a Shilen 1/250 heavy taper barrel I am buying. It could always come out of the Tracker stock ang go into a Pro Varmint or other stock in the future. I guess I just need another project/gun like Bill

sounds like a shooter in the making. I will be interested in seeing the group sizes from the Shilens. The Shilens seems to be very accurate, but doesn't seem like a lot of people use them.
Good luck, keep us updated on the progress.

Shilen makes good barrels but I doubt one could do much better than Kreiger and Brux. the shilen might be just as good? there are lots of good barrels out there, for most guys the high end barrels are not needed but for us ML nerds?

You also need some ankle weights so you can keep both feet on the ground when you pull the trigger!

Sounds like a plan Richard. Maybe there is a little magic left in that action and stock...

The reason I am going with the Shilen is that Elkman has bought and built a number of muzzle loaders on them and he raves on their accuracy and the consistency of the bores. If he was not an accomplished machinist and a very skilled 1k BR shooter along with having done a lot of LR hunting in PA over the past 40 years, I would not take the chance. He is also giving it to me for his cost and sending it with no money on my end. If I don't like the bore or the way it feels, I can send it back. Aside from that, there is no other way to know if a barrel shoots other than..........well, shooting it? He just shot a 4" three shot group at 600 with one he built for a customer the other day? Airborneike also had gotten excellent results with his Shilen so, we will see. Until I get this action up to Mike and he looks at it, there is the possibility the bolt conversion might not work. I am waiting on the barrel, which was shipped yesterday, to come so I can bring it along with the action up to Mike, who is about an hour north of me. If not, I will put it on one of the Remington ML actions I have. I am sure someone along the way will want it.

Well, I was up to Mike's place today and he talked me out of using the custom action! So the build will be on a blued Rem. 700 ML.

Hello everyone!
Hey Richard my neighbor wants to know what happen to his truck axle! Just kidding that Shilen barrel should be a real shooter. If I could get the same kind of service from any other barrel marker. I would use their barrels. I believe most barrels markers are making really good barrels. When you talk about trying to set a new world record at 1K then maybe just maybe someone might have edge. But its really hard to tell. The proof is in the shooting.
My only complaint with Shilen is they will not do any custom contours. So I have been buying the #7 light varmint and profiling them as needed. I have used their Sendero taper and it has worked good for a light weight carry type rifle. There really is no such thing as a light weight Smokeless M/L 10LBS with a light scope is about it. Most weigh about 11 1/2 lbs
I am glad to see that you will be using the M/L action. I believe than long barrel shank helps in the accuracy. Shilens start out at .457 and do run on the tight side. Most bullets need to be sized down to .4490 . I have found they shoot better on the loose side then forcing them down with two hands on the ram rod. There is no need for that tight of a fit.

Carl..........that custom CPS action is not going to work out. I had it up to Airborneike and he feels there is not enough cam in the timing to properly extract the 209 primers. Rather than get into details why, lets just say I am going to use one of my 700 ML actions. Mike is also going to make me an insert for the FF die I had previously gotten from him for the Brux? So I will also have a FF Shilen die. He said he only needs 1 1/4" of "drop" to make it so my finished barrel will only be 26 3/4" long. Now I am debating if I should still put it in the Shehane Tracker stock or just get another Boyd's Pro Hunter?

My vote is for the Shehane Tracker stock,, especially if you already have it..

Hey Richard sounds like you want to shoot some of those Barnes TEZ out of this Shilen! That would be a interesting test. You can always go smooth if it doesn't work. I really don't see how your going to improve on the accuracy. The results I am getting from these barrels has been exceptional and very repeatable.
Everyone can get lucky once in a while and shot a group they can brag about I have a stack of targets from all these M/L'S and they have all shot small groups with straight IMR 4198. I think you will find out the Shilen barrel is very forgiving. They will shoot without a wad my Douglas barrel will keyhole bullets every time without a wad. You posted a picture of that gun and 3 shot target I shot at 600 yards. I would never even have come close to hitting the paper without the heavy wool wad. Its hard to believe that a wad can make that much of a difference.
I believe you will also find that the Shilen barrel will turn up more velocity since it has less volume than a .458 bore. So you should be fine with a 26" barrel on your new build.

Hank........you can't imagine all the cans of acrylic lacquer I have left in my basement from back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and early 90's. I have more colors than you can shake a stick at........Including metal flake in various colors.........Not paint, but the loose cut flake from "The House of Colors!". I did a nice heavy gun stock for a 1K shooter in a Cherry Black Caddy color that looked real nice. It might get the nod! Steve..........That is not the action that will go into the stock. That is actually the action that I used to set the 1K record in 2002......along with that stock but a different barrel. And in case your are wondering, that is Teflon Tape on the forend and under the butt end so the rifle recoils smoothly in the bags. I also prevents damage to the paint.

Acrylic lacqure,,, I remember that stuff.., it has been gone from the automotive industry for a long time now but should do wonderful on a gun stock... You can't go wrong with red either...
House of color makes some good stuff. I have use some of their products in the past and was always pleased with the turnout.
