I saw a 700/30.06 adl today at a pawn shop ,it was pretty sweet and only a couple nick/scrapes.....It had some age ,and I know from mentors that the 700 in its prime was the berries....What were the good years and what were the bad I guess is what I seek...? TIA

I think around 400.00....It was an adl Bud's Guns has new ss adl for $482 with scope FYI, don't know if you were looking for one to build off of. I don't know a lot about them these days, I haven't had a Rem. rifle for about 25yrs. Hope you find what you want. Bud's also sells 700 actions ss or blued.

There were good ones and bad ones the entire production time. I have 700 guns that were made from 1963 through 2016 and have not had one that was bad. All of them need to be blueprinted to get the most accuracy but overall the action and bolts are good. Any gunsmith that does not at least true the receiver face when rebarreling should not be working on guns. Triggers on the other hand leave a lot to be desired. If you want a light trigger, go aftermarket. Many of the receivers over the years have uneven front and rear bridges due to the polishing that was done at the factory. This is easily fixed by bedding the scope mounts to fit the receiver. Stock inletting sucks on most all factory guns (other than those that come with sub MOA guarantee). I have not found a Rem, Savage, Winchester, Weatherby, Howa, etc that has not benefited by a stress free bedding job and barrel float.

Thanks Dennis, when I was 20 yrs old ,my girlfriends father mentored me and showed me the old school of woodsmanship, rifles, farming, tree identification,etc....He had some 700's that were sub moa shooters....I looked at some new ones a couple years back and was not impressed on the quality of the gun compared to how the older ones were fitted..... AJ thanks for your info....I was just fishing for the best years of manufacturing of the 700...Like the 67-69 camaro's,lol...

I guess my least favorite is the embellished receivers Remington put out in the mid 90's. It was not engraving but pressed in scroll work that was a place for dirt and moisture to collect. I have one in .17 Remington and while the gun shoots well, I just am not a fan of the scroll work (cosmetically).
