Wanting a lightweight rifle for deer, one with a pencil barrel. Something nice right out of the box, a 7-08 or 308 would be the caliber. Interested in hearing about Tikka, CZ, Howa, Savage, etc. Budget $500-1k. Anybody have something similar they would offer some input on?

I have a 7mm mag with a pencil barrel and have never been happy with it. Maybe just the magnum is too much for that barrel contour. I think you will be well served with any of the rifle brands you mentioned. Check out Hankins custom rifles website he sells accurized rifles for just a little more than you have listed in your budget. That would be a trued action pillar bedded trigger bolt lapped, and done by a professional. I guess it all boils down to what is affordable to you.

I have two rifles that kinda fall into the category you mentioned. I have a newer Winchester Model 70 Featherwieght compact in 308. It's a nice rifle and shoots well, pretty light and compact. I also have a Kimber Montana in 308. The Kimber is extremely light in my opinion. Can't remember exactly but it's just a few once over 5 lbs.
I am happy with both.
I hope this helps. Just shoot me a pm with any questions..

check out the Tikka before buying, they are very accurate and don't break the bank.
I have owned one in the past before they were the "IN" gun but have shot a few that were tack drivers out of the box.

Ok thanks. It will be a short action cal. Watching some you tube vids on the Tikka t3 or tx3. They say they guarantee 1moa. All happy campers. Look great, seem great. Will check them out.
I have a beautiful wood stock CZ550 308, but it has a super heavy contoured barrel, chopped to 19". So it wont be fun to carry in the woods. Happy with the controls and accuracy, just want a super lightweight next.
I see that Jeff makes awesome guns, no doubt. Just a little above my budget with stay at home wife and kid right now. I would be happy to find a used gun, just wanted to hear some thoughts. Thanks.

I have had a Remington model 7 with the skinny (1/2" at the muzzle) 20" barrel in stainless with the synthetic stock in .308 for the past 23 years. This rifle with a good trigger puller and 9x Leupold scope is capable of doing 5 shot groups in the 1.5" range at 300 yards using hand loads with the 165 gr. Sierra GameKing bullet and 4895 powder. I put a muzzle brake on it and it is a pussycat to shoot. When I took my one and only trip up to Saskatchewan a few years ago, that was the ONE gun I took. One shot kill on a 300 lb. animal! The 7mmMag stayed home in the gun safe. Not saying anything about the other recommendations but the model 7 has been around and its hard to beat Remington's reputation. And........everybody and their brother makes a trigger for it if you feel the need; mine just sports a lightened factory trigger. Being from the benchrest crowd I know accuracy and this little rifle delivers all anyone needs for most deer hinting scenarios! JMHO

Last fall before the election I ended up buying a TC Venture in 7mm Mag that guarantee moa accuracy out the box. It shot since factory federal cheap ammo less than an 1" at 100 yards. I picked it up on sale for $380 at Cabela's. I need to get a better scope for it but I like the title for what I bought it for, hunting elk, some day. 😋 They come in different calibers and it also has an adjustable trigger. Something else to look into ☺

I have come across solid reviews on the Mossberg Patriot. Sounds like they brought it out in 2015. Has anybody shot one or have one? I am all for a good deal if its a winner.

I saw one in a friends gunshop being worked on and I think it is similar quality to savage axis and ruger american. I personally wouldn't buy one as it looks of low quality. I would stick with tika cz howa sav. other than axis win. rem. etc. that are in your price range. I kind of like the tika myself.

I have a Tikka T3 Superlight that is a Cabella's exclusive in Stainless with a fluted barrel and a camo glass filled plastic stock. It shoots under 1 MOA as guaranteed. It's my go-to hunting rifle.

I don't have a bunch of CF rifles, SML aplenty, but have had enough to know what I like. I don't particularly like "pencil" barrels, rather have a bit heavier and shorter if ya need to save weight. Have a standard wt barrel on my Encore in .308 Win and it is OK, not great but a minute of elk shooter if I ever need it. I do have a CZ cf and I really like that. Don't know what they offer now but the one I have better than moa out the box with factory ammo and looks great. My experience, yours may be different. 10

I handled a couple a few days ago...to say I was unimpressed would be huge a understatement...they felt and looked very cheaply made.

I figured the Mossberg was low on the list. Just checking after coming accross it. I handled a Tikka and loved it, but they didnt have the lightweight version, so I passed. I will check out Cabelas.
The pencil barrel will work fine for me. Wanting something that is easy to tote. Find a load, then hunt. I have plenty of others for bench shooting. Thanks for the help fellas.

Kinda got derailed on the rifle plan for a bit. My autoloader shotgun puked out, so I am replacing it. Also, I ran into a super sweet deal on a Browning Buckmark and a Ruger 10-22 that I couldnt pass on. They will be for mainly for my boy, with a little dad time thrown in. Lol. I did put my hands on the Tikka t3x, and to say it was sweet was putting it mildly. I may be able to swing it before deer season, but really no rush as I have plenty to use now.

Well I kinda fell into a gun that fit my criteria. Not exactly what I was wanting, but can't pass up some deals. A local sporting goods chain is going out of business, so I went and snooped around. I came home with a Ruger American in 243 for $265, and a Mossberg 500 20ga combo youth shotgun for $230. I shot the Ruger already and it shoots straight! There are two more stores to check, so I will be in the hunt for some other guns and calibers.
