Hello. Kenny Unkefer from the Eastern side of Ohio. New to this board but not totally new with smokeless muzzleloading. Got my start about ten years ago like I'm sure a number of people on here did with the Savage Muzzleloader. It worked well for me for a number of years and a number of whitetails. Last deer with it was a head shot at 105 yards.
In search of a better design to replace it I had Jeff barrel a Remington 700 action for me with a 45 caliber Brux barrel finished at 28". I installed it in a Boyd's thumbhole laminate long action ADL stock. Opened up the barrel channel, glass and pillar bedded it, installed a Limbsaver nitro series grind to fit recoil pad, Nightforce one piece base, Leupold VX-II 4-12X in Leupold PRW rings with older Remington trigger set to about 1.5# and the action is cerakoted in tungsten.
Haven't tested it much yet. Six shots to get it zeroed then fired two three shot groups @ 100 yards. First with 300 grain SST'S and 70 grains of IMR 4198 measured 0.932" and the second with same powder charge but using the 300 grain XTP measured 1.09". Pretty impressed especially considering this wasn't even done off a bench! I chronographed the load as well and 2,750 (one shot) is what I measured. Pretty excited to see that performance in both aspects. Especially considering it was a starting load and can only get better with a custom bullet! Shot some milk jugs full of water with the XTP and it utterly flattens them. Over 5,000 ftlbs of energy will tend to do that. Haha.
I have always appreciated precision shooting. That's what I'm going for in a muzzleloader. Definitely on the right track with Jeff's work!

Welcome to the board!
You're way ahead of the game of many "newbies" joining the board! Yes, good bullets should shrink those already acceptable groups. With little tweaking and solid bench shooting, even the SST/FTX bullets will group even tighter.

Welcome. Dittos to all above. Do you still have your original Savage ML? If you have more than 1 SML you are probably an addict. Ask how I know. 10

Welcome. Dittos to all above. Do you still have your original Savage ML? If you have more than 1 SML you are probably an addict. Ask how I know. 10 I no longer have my original Savage ML. I do still have the one I bought as a spare and never fired. It's a matte finish with black synthetic stock. My original was a camo/stainless one. I'm eventually going to just have my Hankins' muzzleloader. One is really all I need at the moment and the Savage I'm never going to fire it. You have a few SML's I take it? Kenny
