Well here is a real cannon. My hunting buddy built a 338/408Chey-taca few years back when Barney Lawton was alive and he also had a 408 barrel made for the gun we always used the 338/408 with great success but my buddy got the bug to screw the 408 barrel on and see what those big 420 gr bullets will do. Well when 132grs of Retumbo go off behind a 420gr bullet things get loud in a hurry.
We took it to our 1,000 yard range yesterday and shot it on target for the first time. certainly not the flattest shooting gun 420gr Rocky MNT alloy tip hunting bullet took 25MOA from 100 yards muzzle velocity was 2840fps the good news was the accuracy was far better than we hoped because the bullets certainly are not benchrest quality but the dam thing shot under 5 inches for 5 shots at 1,000 yards that is very impressive since he didn't do anything but load the cases and shoot.
Its a shooter but its can be hard on the wallet.

Sounds like a heck of a gun. Sub 1/2 moa @ 1000 is pretty impressive. Thats pretty amazing! What does the rifle weigh? Were those kind of groups similar to what he was seeing with the 338/408?

Yeah we were surprised at the accuracy. The big 338/408 will shoot that good everyday can be different. Big problem with the 408 is the quality of bullets they vary a lot. Where the 300grSMK and Bergers are really good.
Also the 408 drops like a stone it took 25 Moa to get on 1.000 yards and only 16.5 Moa with the 338/408 that is a big difference and at 2,000yards the 338/408 is on with 56 Moa in my part of the country and 70 moa with the 408 and energy wise the 338 is better. I doubt if we will leave it on for hunting season he in Pa. It will be good for shooting through trees when the deer stop behind them.

Sounds like there is a lot of fun to be had with something like that. Just may be a bit pricey... I've got a project rifle that I may have to reconsider... What kind of MV is the 338/408 achieving?

The 338/408 runs 300gr SMK at 3,300fps That is the max for accuracy and case life and barrel life. This gun didn't like the Bergers.
