Prolly a stupid question but what is the best way to tell if a scope is bad . I have a couple of Sightron S Tacs I'm beginning to think may be bad . Both scopes have been on guns that have had over 100 shots .both guns kick pretty hard . One gun seems like all the sudden it won't group with the same load ,other gun seems to group but my group jumped about 6 inches . I'm about ready to order another Nightforce and then I don't have to worry about the scope. I hate questioning my equipment.

I'd check the rings and base.

Best way is grab a different scope you know is good and mount it to your rifle and shoot. This was how I made sure my scope wasn't the issue.

Makes sense just hate to pull my Nightforce off my Hankins but then I'll know for sure. I called sightron today and asked them if they had trouble they said no. They did have some scopes that had flakes but the S Tacs are their best seller . It must be something else

Best way is to put a KNOWN good scope on them. It takes one heck of a good scope to hold up to these cannons Drop

I would put the night force on it and see. Check your base make sure you have used medium thread locker on it. I also use medium thread locker on the rings as well and started using finger nail polish underneath the rings so it holds scope from sliding.

I haven't confirmed by changing scopes yet but that is next. Pressure testing has taken priority as of late.

I was in the same situation with my Sightron...........it is still out being repaired. Same thing..........shots jumping back and forth. Known load that shoots bug holes. Put on an older Burris that has seen duty on my .50's and early .45's..............Groups back to normal.

That's what I'm gonna do HillBill. Been thinking about possibly buying a Nightforce Beast with 2nd focal plane 5x22x56 . But first Gonna throw the NF 8X32X56 on to make sure . If it turns out that it's the scope I'm done with he mid range scopes .

Are smokeless muzzleloaders hard on scopes? I'm just wondering if I ought to be concerned when I pick up some glass for my Apex? I was leaning towards a Vortex Viper HS, as I figure $4-500 is all I need on it. I've owned a pair of Nightforce NXS scopes in the past, with one being on a Larue Tactical OBR 7.62. I certainly don't want to put one on a $600 hinger. LOL!

I realize your frustrated, been there dun that! However I've had good luck with the vortex viper line as long as I mount the scope correctly.
I talked to Hillbill about scopes a while back and he made a point about one piece bases. After our conversation I thought about it a while and realized with a one piece base you can see if your action is true or not. I did this before our conversation but it didn't click then. I mounted the front be down and could literally tap the rear of the receiver with the rear of the scope base. Therefore I bedded the rear with JB Weld. To me it took all the possibility of unwanted torque out of the scope. I then lapped the rings, then torqued the rings down according to Vortex recommendations. I didn't have any issues other than the scope sliding in the rings which finger nail polish fixed that.
I'm ordering a Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 soon for another smokeless build. I believe without the side parallax the score will hold up even better. Just my opinion though.
Good luck with what ever you do, keep us updated would like to know how it turns out.

I own a pair of those right now (VHS-4303) and have no problems with them whatsoever. One is mounted on a Noveske Rogue Hunter and the other on a Remington 700 AAC-SD.

The use of finger nail polish you refer to. I am interested how you are using it. Are you applying to the ring then letting dry prior to locking the scope in? Thanks for taking the time to to explain the process.

Like rambler said, what I do is once I have scope lined up the way I want it I'll torque either the rear or front down then take the top ring off the one that isn't tightened down. Apply a small amount on the inside of ring then attach. Torque it down to spec then do the other one. You could also use a small amount of silicone. I torque it all down while it's still fresh I don't wait for it to dry. Hopefully that makes sense.
