Tomorrow is last day of deer season and I tried to fill the freezer today. River quit floating ice so thought I'd try the spot where I got the young deer earlier. When we got to the river was surprised to see ice floating because temps have been in the 40-50's. Well dad said let's go it wasn't floating yesterday it can't be too bad. Well it ended up being slush not ice so we headed down the river. Got to the spot and dad set his duck decoys up and we headed back into the island. We sat and called but nothing came in however I kept thinking I heard stuff walking around. Well with the wind right I told my boss I'd walk around and push the small timber to him hoping for a shot. I ended up kicking up 20+ deer but none of them would work towards my boss everyone went into the wind past me and with it being so thick I couldn't get a shot. I had one big doe run right at me and stop behind a small tree. I had a "Jeff" shot so I decided to take that since she was only 25 yards away looking away. Well I didn't see the vine and hit the vine which ricocheted the 300 SST into the tree. She stood there long enough for me to reload but just as I was getting ready to put primer in she took off. Dang it. Well I had to get a good laugh at this though. I'm 2 for 2 with trees this year!! If you look to the left you can see where I hit the vine.

It happens... Trees are a little tougher to skin. LOL Missed a giant a few year back, got a few grapevines and almost cut a sapling down. I guess it had more points than the buck.

Got a smaller vine years ago with the smoker. The bullet dead centered on the vine. Thought it made me miss the target.....couldn't tell with all that darned smoke hanging in the air. Reloaded and decided it wise to go check, and there laid a doe, right where I shot her! LUCKY!!

Been there and done that with buck shot up in NY state. Followed the buck down the hill and pulled the trigger as he walked behind a large sapling that took the full load! Fortunately the buck stopped dead in his tracks (no he was very much alive) and allowed me a second shot.............not good for hime but good for me! Hey Fece' Occurs Chad!

All part of the great sport we love and call HUNTING.
Guess that's why they call it "Hunting not Killing".
Hard core hunting dealing with ice and slush !!!
Best of luck.
