Make sure you get one compatible with onx-hunt maps. I've been researching them myself but for now the onx-hunt map works great on my phone so I am using that for now.

Looking to use one for hiking, hunting. thanks pros: in conjuction with a map and compass makes getting lost just about impossible. cons: always have back up map and compass. satellite phone is handy too.... lol I prefer UTM coordinates and maps with those attributes.

The wife bought me an expensive Garmin about 8 or 10 years ago. Nice unit, top of the line, all the buzzers etc. Lost it on a 4 wheeler trip and bought the cheapest Garmin there is, 90 bucks. With it and a map that has UTM coordinates I don't need anything else. All the other add ons are just superfluous.

I've had quite a few of Magellan and Garmin GPS but my latest purchase is the Garmin 64ST. One of my coworkers uses one out west for Elk hunting and so far on the state lands I've hunted near my house they work great. It's probably overkill for what I actually use it for but I'm happy with it. I'm sure there's better ones out there for the price. I mostly use it for hunting state land and getting back to my vehicle since I tend to walk in a bit farther than most. Plus it works great for plotting deer sign when I'm out checking new areas. Can't go wrong with the Garmin and I find them much more user-friendly than the Magellan units. Just my opinion of course...

A Garmin 60 CSX is a older model but a very good design,I use a Garmin Astro 220 because we track dogs but I also use it for everything else and it works fine.

Why not use on X, or gaia? I went to Colorado on an elk hunt this fall and was going to buy one until I researched it and found out what my phone could do. I loaded on X and it was impressive to say the least. I also borrowed a handheld GPS and took it along in my backpack (as a backup), which I took out on day 2 because my phone was all I needed. Just make sure to download all the area you will be hunting before you run out of cell phone service, then switch to offline mode. I also turned on airplane mode so my phone wouldn't kill the battery searching for service. However, we were hunting from a base camp where I could charge my phone every night. If backpacking in I would probably get a hand held.
