I have been experimenting with some high B.C. 40cal bullets I have been turning up on the lathe. Started with a 260 grain and shot a few of those with decent groups but showing pressure signs on the primers. For fun a couple of weeks back I took the same ogive as the 260g. and lessen the bearing surface up to make a 200 grain. I didn't have any hopes whats so ever that they would group. But I took a few out to the range anyway and they showed some promise. Today I made up 6 more at 200g. and used the same load as last time, (76g. IMR3031) FF them up. I wanted to shoot 3 at 100yd and 3 at 200yd. The first 3 out at 100 yielded my best group ever .1 in. Being all excited by this group I shot 3 at 200yd with less then steller results. The good info from this 200yd group was in the vertical plane P.O.I. was only a 1/2in lower then the 100yd group. but spread out horizontally 3.5 in. Will have to work with the load a little to see if I can get it to tighten up at longer distances. Here is the bullet and 100yd target.

Looks good. What ogive profile did you use? I have been trying to figure out what I am going to use on my .40 bullets based on how my .458s have turned out. I am considering 10S for the .40 bullets.

Very impressive 100 yard group and with a bullet you made yourself. Please keep shooting and posting. I am trying to decide if my next build will be a .40. Scott

Are you shooting a .392/.400 or a .400/408 barrel if sabotless? Any sizing on the bullets or are they machined to fit? Quite an impressive group.

The ogive profile is a 4 in radius that I came up with on a cad program. So a 10S? The barrel is a .392X.400 PacNor @ 27in. 1in 16 twist. With these coppers bullets be it Barnes 195 or the homegrown kind seem like they have to be pushed hard to get good groups. I would love to say I can do this kind of group all the time but the fact is I can't. Got lucky on this one. I will say I will always expect minute or less groups all the time. These customs are turned to a .400 dia. annealed to a dull cherry then quenched. Full formed to fit the barrel then indexed in. I also shot some 195 Barnes today with the same load with 3 printing a 7/8 in @ 100 and 3 printing 2" @ 200. Joe
