Almost green chile season in New Mexico.

Im growing Sandia Select and Big Jim Heritage. Plus a mystery pepper (probably middle east variety) that is similar to an Anaheim.

Gmb, Have you every planted Turkish hots or India red hots they both look like your mystery pepper. I know the Turkish one will self plant if you miss a pepper

Those mystery peppers are hotter than a scotch bonnet and a member of the chinense family for sure. Im not aware of anything in Turkey that fits that description. They are extremely similar in shape to a naga morich and a red devils tongue. Heat level dont seem high enough to me to be a naga though. They are hot but not hotter than the last ghosts i picked.
Im growing several peppers from Turkey and Syria but none of them are very hot.

Im also growing
Bell of Gollu...sweet and mild...SUPER tasty pepper Bell of Lebanon...sweet and mild Tekne Dolmasi....huge sweet mild bell type Antep Aci Dolma....semi spicy bell from Turkey...can get in the upper jalapeno range Tursusu biber from Fords Fiery Foods....hot Turkish pickling pepper (hotter short version)....there are several kinds with the same name Another mystery pepper that is similar to a Anaheim....Appears to be a Kapya biber or a cross with a Maras biber
Aleppo from isolated seeds. My seeds came from a grower in Cali that got the seeds from Syria. He only grew Aleppo peppers last year to insure they grew true.

Here is a cool mild one im growing too. Its called a Farmers Market jalapeno aka potato jalapeno because of the heavy corking. Very mild but great jalapeno flavor. From about a week ago From just a day ago.

A big part of it is learning what grows well for you. Last year i grew a variety of Scotch Bonnet that produced poorly but plants looked ok. This year i have some Peruvian rocotos that look stellar but i will be lucky to get 12 ripe peppers off all 4 of them. I sent a buddy in Idaho the exact same seeds. His rocotos are loaded with peppers. At the same time he has some other peppers im growing but his production is way worse than mine. His climate is way closer to what a rocoto pepper likes than mine. They love much cooler nights and less humidity.
This year i tried 2 more bonnet varieties and i got them coming out the wazzoo. Reds produced first and now i have a wave of yellows that looks like it will be insane. I planted extra just in case because these seeds are hard to get and last years yellows had such poor production.
Pretty much everyday now i have peppers i set outside to sun dry and bring them inside each night. Near the end of the season it wont be hot enough so i will have to use my dehydrator. Sun dried taste better to me.
Next year i will be one step closer to growing mostly what i know works here and what flavors i enjoy the most. Ive tried many kinds of Jalapeno and every year the Bonnie Mucho Nacho performs great. Nice plants with plenty of large hot jalapenos. Avoid most other JUMBO types. They got no heat or flavor compared to them. This year i tried the famous Biker Billy from Burpee. They taste great but they are no where near as productive. I got them side by side with my Mucho Nacho and its simply no comparison.
Jalapeno must produce for me since ground space is very limited and they wont get as large in my pots. I have one variety that does really good in pots though and the peppers are very good. Ive got one more kind of jalapeno to try that is a landrace from Mexico. Since its not a hybrid saving seeds becomes an option. Seeds from hybrids are a crap shoot. You might get what you want or you might not.

Bunch of Papa Dreadie Scotch Bonnets, some Brazilian Starfish and Sichuan peppers. I am amazed by the flavor of the starfish. Sweet like a ripe cherry and heat is just a little over a jalapeno. Milder if you avoid the area near the seeds.

Still cranking out the pods. The Aji Panca are really cool too. Maybe jalapeno hot but have a totally different flavor.
This bell from Turkey is about as hot as a jalapeno too but super sweet. Walls are thin so its also excellent for drying. Pods get way larger than Bonnie's Cajun Bell.

Finally got some nice Big Jim Heritage Anaheims ripe and some Farmers Market jalapeno ripe. Seriously i cant process all the peppers fast enough into dried or sauce. Freezer is getting close to full on peppers i will use before next year.
