Full blown bionic chiggers will last almost a month. If you ever get a bad case, a cortisone shot will stop the itching in 2 days flat. I had thousands one fall after going through a head high field to recover a deer and had to get a shot.

I haven't had to deal with those nasty things in over sixteen years after moving to Maine from Florida. That said we have more skeeters and black flies in spring and early summer than any place I have ever been. We also have deer, horse and moose flies that will bite the sh_t out of you in the woods.

This stuff ain't goin' on my skin:
Permethrin was classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans" in 1991. This means that IARC could not decide whether or not permethrin can cause cancer. The U.S. EPA decided that permethrin was "likely to be carcinogenic to humans" if it was eaten. This decision was based on the structure of permethrin, what happens to it in the body, laboratory tests that caused tumors in mice and evidence of tumors in rats.

The best way to not get chiggers is dress accordingly... Long pants, hi top socks, boots the lace up and you should be fine.. I never get them but I dress like this daily.. Short pants and sandals just invite them little critters to latch on...

I always use whatever has deet in it. I use Ben's 100% deet during bow season. If you try it out put a very small amount on a non sensitive area. It doesn't bother me but it will irritate some people's skin.

I use long rubber gloves when dealing with the liquid.

I have had 2 Lyme disease tick bites since 95 and in 80 had Rockey Mountain Spotted fever. I use repellent most every day I go outdoors, even just in the yard at home. I mostly use the aerosol like Cutters and spray any exposed skin below my waist if wearing shorts or spray socks and lower legs if long pants and spray waist area. If actually going in infested areas like tall grass and brushy areas I use the Permanone on clothing. At the Challenge I just hit the stick legs, socks and shorts with a light aerosol and no bites. With the Lyme bites I can say that 6 weeks of antibiotic regimin messes your eating up. I was lucky in that I got the clinical sign of the bullseye on both my Lyme tick bites and started the antibiotic regimin before the disease could develop. Blood test did show I was exposed but disease did not develop. Lyme is VERY bad if it developes in your body a fellow church member developed Lyme undetected until severs symptoms developed and after a 15 month battle he died of the effects. Hope all are over the chiggers and take precautions to avoid any of the biting bugs. As for treatment for chigger bites Mom would douse us with Campho Phoniq. Grand Maw just used "lamp oil". Hope all well and safe and healthy. 10
