I had a customer come up today to get his CVA Apex conversion I just finished this week. He arrived at 10:30 this morning and had a few hours to spend so I could go over loading and shooting procedures with his, as this was his first smokeless/sabotless gun. After a few minutes in the shop we went out to the shooting bench. We took five Pittman Accumax 275 grain bullets, five primer modules and five powder charges of 65 grains of IMR3031. I explained everything to him while I was loading the rifle and set up on the bags and fired the first shot... He saw "man you almost hit the dot".... I loaded a second shot and set up again., talking to him and showing the procedures again,, letting him know how important it is to do everything correct and not get distracted. I fired the second shot and he said " I can't see that one.. So I loaded the third shot and set up to fire it... "Bang" I fired the third shot and gain he said " I can't see that one".... So we walked out to the target to get a closer look... This is wht we saw.... We talked a few minutes and I handed him the gun and said,,, "ok,, now you shoot it.." I watched him load it and kept an eye on him. He did everything correct and sat up on the bench. He fired the Apex and hit high, directly above the dot.,, So he loaded it again and shot... Again he was high on the dot but he was very happy that his group was close together and he needed to head back home so he did not shoot any more at my place,,, He said, he could shoot it all he wanted at his farm and get it dialed in to suit him... Needless to say,, when he left,,, he was as happy as a pig in mud.... Here is his two shot group above the dot on the same target I was shooting at..... Them Apex rifles converted with the HIS system sure do shoot good.....

looks like a shooter. that will be my go to gun this hunting season. Now rifles in the county I hunt, but an accurate muzzleloader is even better than a rifle. Typically no tracking with the muzzleloaders

That's a sweet group! Bergara barrels and Jeff's ignition system is a combo that's hard to beat in a break action. If I didn't love the 45-70 govt. cartridge so much I would have him convert my Apex 45-70.

Another great shooting Apex. That man doesn't need a brake, and his smile says it all.

Any idea on what that load clocks out at?
I have run some of the older 275gr BE parkers over 4198 and shot groups about like the one the new owner shot on top of the bull out of my little apex. It seems the apex's really seem to shoot well. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Apex 45/70 barrels are listed as 1-20 twist.

Any idea on the fps of 65gr of IMR3031 and the 275gr.
And, is that about as light of a bullet you can use with 3031?

I shot that load at the last challenge with my Apex and we got 2400 something FPS, can't remember exactly. I would think you can shoot lighter bullets but I have not tried it... Maybe I will try shooting some and see what happens.

How was the recoil and muzzle jump with that short barrel 24"?

2400fps is just fine with me. Always looking for "fun" loads with a reasonably low peak pressure. Most if not all of the traces ive seen are using way more 3031 and with a 300gr bullet or larger. Even a 350gr with moderate amounts of 3031 should be a cream puff in the peak pressure department.
I shoot mostly 225gr to 250gr bullets for recreation.
