We took our Rottie out for her first dock dog event this weekend. She is very comfortable jumping off the side of a pool, but was very hesitate to jump from the dock. After 4 attempts she finally jumped. She was in 5th place as of Friday night for the novice group, and today in the finals she came in 2nd place. Her best jump was 10'-5". Some of the experienced dogs jumped 20-22'.

here, we have several waterfowl, and decoy shows yearly where they have dog competitions just like this. Ive never heard the term "dock dogs" before though. The owner usually tosses a retrieve dummy, in attempt to prompt the dog to jump farthest.

I think the term dock dog is like a brand. The other groups are called ultimate air dogs. There were lots of labs, and belgium malinois in this event, only 1 other rottweiler. She has a favorite ball, so that is what we used for her to retrieve.
