Now that the season is over for most folks try to find a used Excalibur bow. They have a lifetime warranty plus you won't have to take it to the pro shop every few years to get new cables and a string. Those costs will exceed the cost of many bows over time. The ATA show is over so some guys will be upgrading to the latest and greatest product. Craigslist and Archery Talk usually has a selection for sale.

I keep going back to the fence. Times like now, late season when I have to wear bulky clothes. I still have tags and freezer space, season is open but only bow. Im just not as comfortable pulling a bow with that much clothes on. Those bags you have to zip your arms out of? I would be pegged before I could draw. Late season crossbow... Im thinkin a nice and simple recurve.

My brother has used SA sports recurve crossbows with good success. Just keep shots close. Dave

I don't know boo about crossbows but wanted one for years. As soon as I saw some of the first X-calibers I always thought they were neat and in the back of my mind I wanted one.
Two years ago I sold my boat and was buying gear and hunting stuff so that the money didn't evaporate, I'm sure most of you understand this. Anyway I bought a Matrix 380 package at one heck of a good price brand new. Love it and that thing is amazing but I have never hunted with it and to be honest I have not shot it for a year now.
Iowa has no "real" season for it so I have not bothered to even buy broadheads or do any additional work. I wish they would open a season and think they will in the next few years.
As far as a $500 limit, I can't blame you there but I think you can buy a lot of bow for that price. As stated above I would stick with the solid limbs and fogo the cams. I have friends with cam xbows and they have all had problems. I have shot mine about 300 times and only had to twist the string up a bit to adjust the brace height.
One last suggestion. I dont think you need an xbow as powerful as mine and I would almost tell you not to go that heavy. Then again were all different. I am pulling mine with a stringer and it is all the pull I want to deal with.
Good luck and have fun hunting with whatever you choose. That's what it's all about.

Yea, the idea of hunting with a crossbow during late ML season when it is legal for everyone really doesn't turn me on. I just need to find a doctor who will not charge an arm & leg for tests to confirm my bum shoulder.

Squeeze,
Thanks for the review, I just checked it out and seems like an unbelievably good deal for the money.

Another option is look for a deal on a used setup on archerytalk.com. I've had real food luck buying like new bows at a great price. That includes crossbows. They have a crossbow section on that forum. Just an FYI.

on sale right now at Cabellas link $250 and with Cabela's warranty, and CS you almost can't go wrong. Now I see a lot of guys buying them, as a backup, or for the kids. I have yet to see a disappointed review. for the price, you can't beat it

I went to order one and it said 4 to 5 weeks before shipping so I didn't. I don't like back ordering.
