Ok, I know the trend is .45 but has anybody tried the .500 Hornady FTX in a .50 to see if they would work as land riders similar to the 45 stuff? Im trying to find a simple combo before I pull the barrel out of this 700/.50 and go 45.

Thor or Fury. Get a "sample pack" to check which size your bore should take. Tried a few of the 50 Hornadys but they not worth the trouble in my 50s. 10ga

I would save the bullet money toward a 45 barrel. I tried a few full bore 50's with no better than 6" groups so my vote is it's not worth the endeavor.

I shot the Fury .50cal original star tip 325gr bullet from my BP Xpress. A veggie was used with 105grs weight of BH209. The accuracy was excellent to 300yds. At 400 they fell completely apart. Its more than likely that the star tip2 would have shot even better, but was never tried.
In all honesty, I was really tired of working so hard with the .50cal and had the rifle converted to .45cal with a Rock Creek barrel. I'm well pleased now.

Understand, I have been fighting this gun since I put it together. I'm going to try these bullets and some Crush rib sabots with some 452xtp and if it doesn't settle down after that I'm going to take it apart. All I'm looking for is a 200-yard gun

Black crush rib + .458 bullets + light knurl on the bullets. With factory loadings that showed me what a SML could do when I was at the start of my learning curve with the 1st ML2. AND oh yeah, shoot cool barrel, heat ememy of sabots. My experience and opinion, others will be different. 10ga
PS: I did lap the barrel and bed the action. Both brought some improvement.

10ga,,I have a sample of the red crush ribs, and a lot of 250g and 300g XTPs, this rig is fairly light(700cf action)28" prefit remage, vortex scope, setting in plastic stock cuz its a lefty, and don't want to invest in a stock until I see hope. With the 300s and 44g of 5744 it kicks pretty good

So you spent big bucks on a Remage 50cal barrel but dont want to upgrade the stock yet? You wont ever get much speed with 5744 and a 300gr but thats a topic for the smokeless section anyway. BH209 will almost match 5744 in speed at way less pressure.
What brand and twist is this 50cal Remage barrel?

Well i didn't pay for it, glad I didn't at this point, and im lefthanded with L/H action so finding stock is not easy, buy I tried 110g t7 also with 250xtp/ black sabot, speeds were avg 1975,grouped about 6"@100. Finally located some 5744 and tried that, only slightly better groups, slightly faster speeds,so far my S/S optima although slow will outshoot it by far

The guy claims it is a 1 24, Brux ,stainless. I have verified the twist but I cannot verify what brand it is, and after learning a little more in the last few months I don't know whether to trust the guy who sent it to me or not

Ok, mainly wanted to make sure its not a 50cal 1-20. Those can be more fussy. A 1-24 is pretty good. It should shoot a 300gr really well with the right sabot.
See if you can count the lands. Is it 6 or 8? Ive only seen a Brux 50 1-24 in a 6 land.

Will look when I get home today, seems like it is 6 but will confirm, and from what ive been told about the guy who sent me this barrel and plug, I have no idea what brand it is, looks nice but not a shooter yet. wish I knew about this site and hankins before I wasted so much time with the 50 bbl. several misfires before I tried AA5744 powder, and T7 looked like a shotgun pattern instead of a group

I reload for a lot of my stuff, some wildcats and magnum pistols, but I have never had a gun shoot this bad , the very first load misfired and its been aggravating ever since.

Without knowing more about about ignition type i cant comment on the miss fires. 5744 though ignites very easily. Failures are often a user error such as carbon in the flash channel or the sabot is way too loose. Another common problem is using the wrong primer if its a 209. You want full power 209 primers. NOT muzzleloading 209 primers.
If this "guy" is Luke at ASG his rep is pretty solid on most boards (besides this one) and he does sell Brux 50cals.

No definitely not Luke, I have spoken to him, he knows the"guy" im talking about, no nice words, anyways its a PRbullet cut case LMRP and yes it was not enough pressure on bullet to let powder light, the 3 misfires caused the fed 215 primers to push powder charge and bullet/sabot partially down barrel but not fire.

Oh its CBJ. He often uses Green Mountain barrels from PR. Those are 1-26 twist as far as i know. Not a bad barrel but that ignition system is not that great.

yes CBJ, I made a hasty decision to use the barrel luckily I didn't foot the bill for it, the barrel is probably GM(he claimed brux but??)and may shoot fine once I get the load figured out but this is turning into work and Jeffs CVA conversions seem to do exactly what I want from this one, ive got AA5744,H4198,AA2015,H335 powders to try but all the savage guys seem to settle around 44g of 5744 so I tried that and it went bang every time but not impressive speed, I don't need a 275be going 9000fps like some of the loads, lol, just looking to push a 250-300g around 2000fp that will kill on front without crippling on the back end. I have spoken with the guys at Mcwhorter and blended some of their design with the PR cut case system to increase primer ignition by making a "plug" to drop into the cases and take up the wasted space, so now I have a .125" flame channel from primer to the vent liner hole. I made the gun reliable with 5744 but accuracy is still not good , and nowhere near what I want.
