A cool 31* and light breeze at the range this morning with only myself and fellow SML’er Herman. Bill was a little under the weather!
This morning I was trying out a new piece of lexan in my window unit. This keeps the cold air out and just allows the muzzle of the rifle to extend out past the window. This also blocks the LabRadar. I had used a piece of corrugated plastic and the radar was going thru and picking up the shots. I though the lexan would be a nice touch as it allows more of a view outside the range house. This however, was giving me a problem from time to time. After messing with it, I finally removed it and it picked up all the shots? Its funny, because I put it in front of Herman’s LR and it read the shot?....Put it back in front of mine and it also read the shot…………but not the next one???
So, while getting no readings, I fouled the barrel with five 300 gr. Speer Deep Curl bullets and 93 gr. of 8208 (two grains heavier than last week). The Deep Curls shot about like normal…..just so-so! With all five at 100 yards in .886”.
Not wanting to use up more of the 8208 loads I had with me, I switched to a duplex of 10/65 - N110 and H-4198 with the 300 grain XTP. Here I managed to pick up three of the 5 shots for 3001 fps with a 21 fps ES. It put the first three in .408” and all five in .863”
My main goal was to shoot the 350 AeroMax’s with 2 gr. more powder (91 gr.) than I did last week so, I launched one bullet down range at 100 yards to see where it impacted? And, it hit ¾” + at 12:00 with an initial velocity reading of 2947 fps. To this POI, I added 3 MOA and moved out to 300 yards.
Group #3….350 AeroMax, with 91 gr. of 8208 gave me 2920 fps with a 13 fps ES. It put three shots in .611”, all five in 1.240” and the best four in the same .611”.
#4..325 AeroMax with 93 gr. of 8208 gave me 3013 fps with a 14 fps ES. It put three in .579” and all five in 1.928” with the best four in 1.117”.
The last group used the 300 AeroMax with the same 93 gr. of 8208 and it yielded 3064 fps with a 13 fps ES. It put four in 1.119 with all five in 2.317”. I was watching my 200 yard wind flag thru the scope but it did not want to cooperate and enable me to get off all five shots in identical conditions and shot #2 took a hit (I believe?)
All in all, I am liking this IMR XBR 8208 real well. It seems to work with various weight bullets. I will also try it with the 275’s just to see what it will do.
