I am enjoying shooting this gun even though it does thump you pretty good at the bench with the stout loads I am running through it. I shot this today with 250gr Barnes boat tail bullets they don't any flatter than the flat base but they do load in the case without any flaring. Any way you slice it the 450 is a short range round. Its accurate but the BC on these 250gr bullets sucks even when started at 2500 fps they drop off pretty bad at 220 yards. Sighted in 3 inches high at 100 yards still put me 6.5 inches low at 220 yards good accuracy but the claimed BC doesn't match up with real world tests.
Since I really only plan on using this gun for woods hunting and field edges my shots will be below 200 yards. The 450 was never indented to be a long range round its fun to shoot and the 22 inch barrel really makes the velocity jump up compared to the carbine. If you hunt out of a tree stand in the woods I can see were the carbine would work better but I like longer barrels. I hope to do fur tests in Ohio with this gun. If I have to shoot further I can fall back on my 45/70 loaded with 310gr Arrowhead bullets they shoot very well out of my CVA 45/70 and if that won't get the job done then I can always fall back on my smokeless muzzleloader.

I will have 5 different 450bm hunters to give fur details from this weekend. Four will be using factory Hornady Black.
I am the only handloader, so will use 260gr Nosler Partition Golds and older 250 sst's.
Three are 18" AR's, two are the short Ruger American carbines.

Boy I don't know if that 250gr bullet has enough power to kill a deer. Hey good luck the 450BM should be around for a long time. I don't see where the 350 Legend has the energy past 150 yrds to take deer on marginal shot placement. Big selling point is the low recoil and cheaper ammo. The .357 bullet suffers the same problem the 45 does poor BC bullets for extended range but that is one of the reasons they have been approved for hunting.

Nice. I thought they legalize all centerfire rounds or was that just on private land. I am looking forward to hunting in Ohio but I am having a rough time with my right knee it's starting to piss me off. Good thing I won't be doing a lot of hiking around in Ohio compared to the steep mountains I have in Pa. A friend of mine killed a doe yesterday in NY with his 350 legend he said it did a good job I really don't know how far she was or what bullet he ended up going with I just think the 350 is going to more critical of shot placement.

Good luck with the knee! Being that I'm ignorant to the 450 BM, have you tried any Pittman bullets? I was thinking I might order a 26 inch barrel for my encore in 450 just wondering if it would eat Pittmans or not. The BC should be better and they fly like darts. Any thoughts?
