Had a little time to try some H1000 powder in the 7mm. I stayed with the 180gr Berger hunting VLD bullets. I started off with 74.0gr and went up to 74.8grs I did all my tests at 365 yards the results were not great 74.4grs shot the best and 74.8 shot big so I now that I won't be going there again. No pressure at 74.8grs but no accuracy either.
The barrel originally liked 175gr and 180 bullets now it doesn't . All my tests have been with jamming the bullets into the lands about .020 next thing to try will be jumping them that is what Berger always recommends doing if they don't shoot into the lands back off .050 I usually don't go back .050 to start but I have jumped 210gr VLD bullets in my 300wsm as much as .120 and they shot good .090 off being the best so that will be my next try also I think RL25 will do better than H1000 but I don't have enough RL25 to do any testing right now. I did check the velocity with 74grs up to 74.8gr an it was fast top speed was 3160fps from a 27 inch barrel that's pretty darn good speed wise but the accuracy was not there. The groups averaged about 1.500 for 5 shoots that may sound good but a good shooting 1,000 yard gun will shoot well under one inch at 365 yards
For benchrest accuracy I will probably have to get much closer to 2960 to 3,000 fps to get really good accuracy also it my prove to be that the barrel is simply not going to shoot as good as it did in the past even though the chamber is into good barrel steel that doesn't always mean that it will shoot. Time will tell on this one.

Thats pretty impressive speed for a 180 in 7mm... Hope you find the accuracy node for that one.
Do you think RL25 is about ideal for that case & barrel length?

I believe RL25 is a great powder for that size case it works really well in my 7mm STW with a long 36 inch barrel but I know it worked very well in a 30 inch barrel or less. I don't know when I will get to do anymore testing maybe later in the fall.

What kind of velocities are you seeing out of that 36" STW? That would be an amazing long range rig I would expect.
Understand about the time to shoot issue. My stuff usually collects dust while I work...

This a Heavy long range rifle the barrel is a 1.350 diameter its epoxied into a steel block that is 8 inches long so the action is free floating and then approx. 26 inches of barrel ahead of the block is free floating. The velocities have been amazing. Years ago I started off using the 162gr Hornady international match bullet with the big aluminum tip. I was able to pushed then up to 3550fps but they would not stand that much velocity from a 1-8 twist barrel some would go down range about 50 yards and blow up. So early on I switched to the Berger 180gr hunting VLD bullet and ran those at 3350fps with no problems. I have shot the new 195gr EOL bullet at 3,300 fps an they shot well out to 1500 yards that would be about the max range for a 7mm bullet where I live here in Pa, out west in high altitude say 9,000 ft they would be awesome out to 2,000 yards.
A good friend of mine lives in Montana an he long range hunts he know several guys that used the 195gr EOL bullet on elk with poor results he said the bullet doesn't penetrate enough on a elk for clean kills on mule deer it was good not elk. We shot several deer with the 162gr Hornady with the big tip at ranges up to 1,000 yards none of the bullets exited they where in tiny pieces inside the chest cavity with massive internal damage most deer never took a step. But they also lacked the accuracy I was looking for the 180gr Berger works well.

Man, that's a heck of a rig. Thats amazing the kind of velocities you're getting with those bullets. This kinda thing is gonna get me in trouble down the road... I'm getting too many good ideas. LOL

Elkman U might want to try the Berger 180 hybrids. They have a much shorter bearing surface than the vld and are quite easily tuned in my experience. Pressure is not as high either so u can gain even more speed once u work up to max pressure. I shoot them in a 7 Ultra at 3186 fps and on good days can usually put 3 on target at 1000 yds in 3”-4”. Start them at .015 off the lands and move them out .015 at a time while testing. I’ve learned that lots of rifles will shoot hybrids very well while jumping as much as .100. Hope this helps

I use the 215 hybrid in my 300wsm its a very accurate bullet. The 7mm Weatherby was mainly a experiment I new the case was bigger than I really needed to push the 180gr bullet to a comfortable 3,000 fps. Its a proven fact that for 1,000 yard bench rest accuracy normally falls below 3,000 fps will all cartridges for hunting that's a different story because your not trying to shoot record groups. Speed and good accuracy will do the job there. For now I barked that gun I still have two 1,000 yard matches left for this season and I know I will be shooting my 6mm Dashers regardless of conditions.
Right now I am in 5th place for two gun overall group and score I hope to stay there or improve slightly. You have to shoot what shoots the best and the most consistent an that's my 6mm dashers. There is only (1) 300 wsm in the top 10 an no 7mm of any kind even though both have way better ballistics on paper. If you have a gun that will shoot 3 inches for 10 shots and you have another gun that will only shoot 6 inches on a good day you go with the gun that shoots the smallest groups regardless of caliber.
