Just got a box of the new Berger 156gr EOL bullets from Bruno Supply. First impressions typical Berger they look like jewels. They check out very good also what Berger is known for. I loaded up 10 to do a quick test from my 6.5/284 with a 1-8 twist Shilen ratchet barrel just a four land barrel with canted lands this barrel has always shot good bullets well an bad bullets poorly. This was also a double test because I put a new Sightron 10x50x60 on this gun on my 7MM Weatherby an it shot ugly groups at 1000 yards which made me wonder if I got a bad scope right out of the box it happens.
I took the scope off the 7mm an put it on this 6.5/284 an shot what I thought was a good shooting load that I had used for 1,000 yard an my group at 100 yards was not really good because this gun does shoot really small groups. So I loaded up the same 142gr load an then I loaded up 10 of the new 156gr bullets backing off on the powder charge just a little. I tested both loads at 365yards this evening conditions were mint to my surprise the 142gr SMK started off pretty good but not what I thought it should be .Very little vertical but some some bullets jumped out of the group an I didn't see any wind that would do that at 365 yards so I tried the Berger 156gr with the first load the group was better than the 142gr Sierra but still not what I was looking for but the next group which had 5 tenths more powder really brought the gun to life I shot 5 shots into .625 now it repeats that should shoot good at 1,000 yards.
The new 156gr bullet is suppose to be stable in a 1-8 twist I'll find out but I really want these for my other 6.5/284 with the 1-7 twist barrel this is a high BC bullet but it doesn't have a radical design which makes it easy to tune I started off into the lands with slight marks on the bullet so I can play with seating depth an I can go up in powder My 142gr load doesn't seem to be working as well as in the past so if the 156gr shoots I won't worry about those anymore.
My next tests will at 1,000 yards with both guns probably next week.
