The youngins (20 something kids/nephews at camp) are constantly blasting their pistols up at the camp range. Brass all over in .45 and .40. I've been picking it up over the past few weeks and figured I'd tumble it and maybe use it one day. I do not have either caliber in my inventory of sidearms.
Well, the pile of shiny brass got the best of me and I bought dies for both calibers along with some FMJ type bullets. Already have plenty of powders and primers. After the Bills SMOKED the Colts Sunday, I went down and got the .45 ACP dies out and went to work. End up depriming, deburring, flaring, charging and seating 120 rounds in about 3 hrs on my single stage Rock Chucker. So much fun reloading any type of ammo. So I have this ammo and no gun! Looking at .45's now. I love my SR9 9mm and am leaning on an SR45.
Anyone have any experience with them? They are basically the same exterior spec as the SR9 so it would be a snap to pack around. Would love the Ruger 1911 but too pricey and for carry, the striker fire guns are nice with their smooth lines.
Love getting a new gun to play with!

never owned one but I like the idea. a man can always use another pack gun. the .45 packs a good punch, it would work well IF a man ever needed it...

I really like the idea of loading ammo. Done it for years with all my guns. Loading ammo for guns I do not have, but are common? 45 and 40? Money in the bank these days! Some one, or me, will use/want it with the climate we find ourselves in. Like I said, Reloading is a very rewarding thing to do. Start off with dirty fired brass and end up with custom loaded ammo that sometimes cannot be found in the store looking shiny and new. I like to load ammo that is clean looking and right to spec so that I can "share" if I have to or want to.
Keep chipping away on primer, powder and bullet stock and you become immune to the periodic shortages in the stores. If it ever goes really south, you are insulated. Fun and necasary for the true shooters out there.
Haven't bought any factory round in years other than 12 ga and .22 rimfire.
Never pass up any brass on the ground. Always shine it up and store it even if you do not have a gun for it. One day you will be glad you did. Just one mans opinion.

I used to shoot nothing but .45 ACP 1911 pistols. I really like the HK45 also if I need a .45 ACP. While the 1911 is cool I found that I was doing too many mag changes in matches and sold it after letting it sit in the safe, unused, for probably 5 years. I also think the 1911 isn't a great carry gun for several reasons. These days with advancements in bullets the 9mm has plenty of punch but sometimes it is fun to swing the big hammer.

I'm sort of partial to 45's...I've owned several full size 1911's, a SW pro series sub compact and my current favorite is a Ruger SR 1991 Commander...Had a Springfield XDS 45 once also.. There's nothing like a good 1911 trigger... For years I've cast all my bullets and hanloaded all my ammo for all my handguns...380acp, 9mm, 38spec, 357 mag, 45acp,40sw..It's the only way that I can shoot as much as I want...have fun with your new hobby Zen

Yeah Zen, the Sr1911 is a very nice gun. I fondled one last week. Something about the way the SR9 slide in and out of a large pocket or my inside the belt holster is making me thing the SR45 will be what I want. Reloading is not a new hobby for me. Reloading 40's and 45's is new cause I don't even have a gun to shoot them in....YET.
Agree with Keith as well. The 9 is a very capable round and it becomes more capable when you shoot it well and stack rounds quickly on a small area of your target. Recoil recovery time is very fast. IMO the 9 is a full step ahead of the 38 spcl and a half step behind the .357 mag.

The 9mm is fine without going super. And easier to find ammo. Doubt a perp would notice the difference between the two when you hit him in the melon. The Super is an interesting round though. But if you want to step it up for whatever reason, what is wrong with a .357 SIG? For defensive pistols and a competent shooter, I think getting a round or two in the right spot is more important than looking at a a ballistic chart. All these handgun rounds are hole pokers compared to a high vel rifle. Got to hit the head, heart or spine to do any quick work of a devil. What you shoot accurately and repeatedly is the best one. Some can do it with anything and some need a more mild round.
I'll take a head shot with a .38 any day over a shoulder/gut shot with a .45. At 15 ft that should be a chump shot if you have mastered your gun.
Pistols suck unless you are a good marksman...IMO...IMO

I have a .45, Kimber Tactical Custom HD2. 45's with weight to them are not hard on the hands. I like the .45 acp.

Pistols suck unless you are a good marksman...IMO...IMO They are an insurance policy against emergencies. For a civilian they are the only real choice outside of the house and for the LEO/MIL guys they are a back-up tool to get you back to the rifle you really need.

I have a .45, Kimber Tactical Custom HD2. 45's with weight to them are not hard on the hands. I like the .45 acp. You can make one shoot soft-ish with springs and matched ammo if you are going for Power Factor but I don't think it's a great idea in a fighting gun. I used to have one setup with springs and soft 185gn loads for matches and then an Al frame Kimber Pro Tactical with springs for 230gn ball as my truck gun. Assailants don't tally extra points for Power Factor either just well aimed, accurate hits. I like the .45 but I can shoot a 9mm faster and more accurately with fewer mag changes.

From some reports I have read, there is a return to the 9mm for police work as Keith noted, they are easier to shoot accurately and with the advance in bullet technology, they have proven as effective as the .45. My former employer went from the 9mm when I was on the job to the .45 Sig just after I left. Not sure if they are still using them?

I can guarantee that you are not the ONLY member here to start buying components and loading for a chambering that you do not yet own the firearm. There are at least two us. <grin>
Personally prefer Colts and Kimbers. Do not have a .45acp on hand at the moment. However, have been toying with the idea of a small frame .45 (Kimber CDP Ultra ?) to keep in the vehicle console. Would be interested to hear what path you when you decide.

No I have not. There have been a few other things that came up so spending the money wasn't in the cards. But, I am still on the same page about what I want.

What a coincidence! I just fell into a used ss sr45 for $329 at a local gun shop this morning. Box, book, original tag, extra mag, gun looks like its had one mag thru it. The clerk said the complaint from the guy that traded it in was too much power. Lol.
