I just traded for a used Bullberry 209x50 barrel. Does anyone have one? Can you share your experience with it including load data?
Thanks in advance.

I started this thread in modern black powder forum because I have no intention of shooting smokeless powder in this SS Encore barrel. I'm hoping to come up with an accurate set up to shoot black powder substitute for hunting.

In any case ,you need to find the best/tightest fitting bullet /sabot combo and go from there....Most have gone to blackhorn209 for powder, You can just get some 777 50gn pellets and try 100gns to start off with under a 250sst/ftx bullet in a sabot....In a .50cal usually a .458 bullet in a sabot will produce the best accuraccy....Good luck with it....

I had Bullberry make a 45-70 barrel for me and had Jeff convert it to a ML using the his system 2-3 years ago.
The barrel that I just traded for is made by Bullberry with a TC breech plug. Blank is marked as a Douglas 1:28 twist. It has the hanger bar system and does not come with a ram rod. It is a catalog item for Bullberry.

I have limited experience with BH209 but a lot with black and subs, at least 1960 to 2008, then I got my ML2. Well I favored real black powder and liked Swiss a lot but found KIK, Black Diamond, Schuetzen and Goex all acceptable. I liked around +- 85 grains of 3F grade in the 50 and smaller rifles and 1.5F or 2F in the 54 and up rifles and muskets. The secret to using real black powder is plenteous use of lube, on wads or cookies or lube grooves etc... Nothing like a 400+ grain or bigger full bore bullet and 70 to 90 grains of black powder. Rock your world and kill at both ends in that light Encore. Why do you think those Sharps and Rolling Block rifles weighed 12 to 15 lbs. My experience. Yours may be different. 10

If your gonna shoot subs shoot Blackhorn. 85 to 100 grains by weight . Blackhorn likes 300 grain ish bullets . You don't need to clean between shots if you have the correct fitting sabot or sabot less bullet . You may need to use a wad if shooting sabot less . Use Fed primers to help with ignition . Blackhorn has a lot of the same characteristics as smokeless just dirtier.

Douglas are one of the least finicky ML barrels ive ever used. Mine is pretty tight so it does not seem to like 458s due to limited sabot selection. I would try a Parker BE 275 or 300gr and a Harvester smooth black short sabot. That barrel should handle any amount of BH209 your shoulder can endure. (within reason)

not a 50 but I do have the 45 Bulberry, excellent barrel but you will have to try several different sabots, my 45 barrel seemed like most sabots were too tight. 65 grains by weight BH209 with 195 grain Barnes bullets would shoot bug-holes no problem.

Our wind finally calmed down now the temps are dropping to zero. I'll be out within the next week to find an accurate load. Thanks for the advice.
