I picked up a box of 243 105 Amax for my Remington 700 243 SPS Varmint with a 1-9.125" 26" barrel. My plan is to use H4350 and Winchester brass and Winchester Large Rifle Primers.
My question is has anyone tried these and what has been their experience with them? This is a factory rifle at the moment so any help or tricks greatly appreciated.
What will be a good starting point? My thought was to make them short enough to fit in the mag and start there. Haven't looked at load data yet but figured I'd start mid way and work up to max of need be.
Thanks for any suggestions and input.
Chad

the 105 amax is a good bullet & according to reports from local buds excellent on deer here in Indiana for people seeking a low recoiling deer rifle.
however your twist rate(9.25) will be marginal for this bullet, might work-might not depending on expectations etc.
at Kentucky this last weekend one of my side projects a 6br-1/8twist with r17 105 amax @ 2884fps was stellar. I was able to control this out to 444yds with winds 10-12mph without missing even the smallest steel gongs during this test.
starting loads refer to hodgdon & its free on the web.
hope this helps.

Thanks deadeye, I will be loading 20 this morning going to work with 5 shots of different charges and see which one shoots the best. Going to work with an OAL as close to the lands as I can.

Just loaded 20 105 Amax Started with C.O.A.L 2.777" ( still fits in mag well) Win Large Rifle Primers Winchester Brass IMR-4350 38.5 - 5 rounds #1 39 - 5 rounds #2 39.5 - 5 rounds #3 40 - 5 rounds #4 Eventually I'll get better brass and switch to Berger bullets. Right now I'm still trying to learn this stuff. I am starting to learn the jump into lands and off the lands .Oo5" terminology.

fyi-the above post by me might have been misleading---- .000 would be touching///.002(off) & .090(jump) both would be jumping.
this br w/ 105 vld hunting also likes a .017 jam but this is not recommended without a chrony & maybe some wildcatting experience.
there are some situations especially w/ .308 where oal depth can stack pressure in a hurry, not always what you read about.
ql can help with predictions also.

Yeah right now I'm trying to keep it simple. I thought about a 243AI but I don't want to mess with forming brass.
If I do anything I may put a custom barrel on my 243 with a faster twist. Right now I want to learn as much as I can and see if I will really like shooting competition.
Next batch of bullets I am going to 2.800" C.O.A.L. from what I read this is closer to the "sweet" spot. Along with maybe 40+ grains of 4350. We'll see where I'm at once I get a chance to shoot these reloads.

Chad..........if you load single shot, you can probably get the bullets seated out a good bit further. Of course if your using it for deer hunting, then you need the magazine...............but then do you? We shoot our muzzle loaders single shot? Yes, you will be marginal with the 9.25 twist rate but then you never know? Sierra says 7 twist for the 110 .243' MK's but so far, my 8.5 is stabilizing them so..........you just have to try them and see? Most benchrest shooters will use a twist rate right on the edge of stability to avoid torque. What can happen with a marginal twist rate is that it will shoot good in warm weather but when the mercury drops down in to the 30's, it will not stabilize. I know a couple of good shooters who found this out by trial and error.

Finally got to the range today was able to shoot the 105's For some reason I just don't feel comfortable when shooting. I need to find someone local that can help me figure out how to settle in and get conformable. I feel like I'm forcing myself to fit into the rifle. After doing more reading on the 105's I didn't have a lot of confidence these were going to group will because my coal was shorter than what was getting good results. Yet I already had these loaded so figured I'd start there. The hotter the load the better the group seemed to get. I believe if I get my coal longer and start with 42 maybe 43 grains of 4350 I might get what I'm looking for. Look at the orange targets and they are numbered according to my info from the original post. I think working on my trigger pull and form will help as well.
